At stake in Erosions is the insistent layering, nesting, of contrasts, of opposites, narratives and counter-narratives: absence/presence, indexical/imaginary, physical/virtual, contingency/transcendence, the weight of circumstance, the heaviness of time/the lightness of being. A score that rises, descends; adagio, allegro, piano, forte, glissando: A chronicle of American landscapes – geographical, historical, political, philosophical. And photography’s unrelenting double entendre in its attention to both invention and document, as in the seamless transfiguration of depicted spaces to fabricated, but where the virtual field nonetheless is figured upon the real, topical samples producing heterotopic spaces, inverting photography’s arrow from past to future. And the materiality of images and the imaginary of matter as the grid meets the fragment, sound collaborates with sight, touch with vision, in that particular commission of the landscape genre: to shape space.
